Percentages and RPE, used together

Plan the block with percentages and use RPE to adjust it on the day. This guide shows how to combine them without losing the structure of the program.

The short version

  • Percentages give you a plan you can write ahead, audit, and repeat. They ignore how the athlete slept.
  • RPE adapts to the day and depends on a judgement skill that takes years to develop and degrades under fatigue.
  • The common hybrid is a percentage skeleton with an RPE cap, which keeps the plan and gives the athlete a brake.
  • Use percentage-led prescriptions with newer lifters because their effort estimates are unreliable in a predictable direction.

What each one is good at

A percentage is a plan made in advance. You can write eight weeks, look at the total volume, see where the intensity peaks, and know what the athlete is meant to be doing in week six before week one starts. You can also compare this block to the last one, because both are expressed in the same units.

An RPE prescription is a plan made in the moment. "Work to a single at RPE 8" produces a heavier bar on a good day and a lighter one on a bad day, without the coach having to predict which kind of day it will be.

A fixed percentage cannot account for five hours of sleep. An RPE target, by itself, says little about how today's work fits the previous or following weeks. Combining them gives the session both context and room to adjust.

Where percentages fail

Percentages are rigid. A prescribed 87.5% can become a costly grinder when the athlete is beaten up, and the sheet has no way to account for the day.

They also inherit every error in the reference max. If that number is inflated by five percent, every session is too heavy by the same proportion. Athletes often blame themselves before questioning the number.

Where RPE fails

RPE depends on calibration, and rating effort accurately takes practice. Novice lifters routinely call an RPE 7 what an experienced coach would score a 9 because they have little experience near their limit.

Fatigue makes the rating less reliable just when it matters most. Four weeks into a hard block, an athlete may under-rate a heavy single because feeling rough has become normal.

An RPE-only block is also harder to audit in advance. The coach can see the planned sets and reps, but the loads do not exist until the athlete chooses them.

A practical hybrid

Write the skeleton in percentages and cap it with effort.

Week 6, squat: work to a single at 90%, stop at RPE 9
Then 3 × 3 at 80%, cut a set if the last one exceeds RPE 8

Use the percentage to plan the session's place in the block, then use the RPE cap to limit the work on a bad day.

State the cap clearly. An athlete who trusts the plan needs to know when the day's condition should override the number on the page.

Using RPE to correct the max

There is a second use for the effort rating that gets overlooked. If a prescribed 80% comes in at RPE 9 for three weeks running, the reference max is too high. If it lands at RPE 5, the max is stale and the athlete has outgrown it.

Those repeated ratings tell you whether the percentages are still calibrated. For a coach running a roster, that feedback can be more useful than changing loads set by set.

How to weight the two by experience

  • First year. Mostly percentage. The athlete is still learning to rate effort, and a fixed plan teaches them what the weights are supposed to feel like.
  • Intermediate. Percentage skeleton with RPE caps on the top sets. They can now tell a 7 from a 9 on a good day.
  • Advanced. Either, and often RPE-led near a meet, where readiness varies more than the plan can predict.

What this means for the block you write

Keep writing in percentages so you have a plan to inspect and reuse. Add effort caps to the heavier work, usually above 85%, where an unexpectedly hard day carries the greatest recovery cost.

Use the ratings that come back to check your reference maxes. If half the roster reports the same percentage feeling much heavier than intended, re-test the underlying maxes.
