7 strength training progression models for coaches
A progression is the shape of the block: what rises, what falls, and what stays stable. These seven patterns give coaches useful starting points—not rigid formulas.
A strength training progression model describes how training stress changes over time. The coach might raise intensity while reducing reps, hold the same prescription long enough for the athlete to own it, or alternate heavy and lighter exposures inside the same week.
No model removes the need to watch the athlete. Research generally supports organizing resistance training over time, but it does not establish one universally superior pattern. A 2022 meta-analysis favored periodized over non-periodized training for 1RM strength and found an advantage for undulating approaches in trained participants; earlier reviews have found smaller or no clear differences between linear and undulating models. Population, duration, volume matching, and training history all affect the comparison.

1. Linear intensity ramp
The most familiar pattern raises intensity from week to week while sets or reps decline. An eight-week squat progression might move from 4 × 6 at 70% toward 3 × 2 at 88%, with a deload before the heaviest exposure.
Good for: a stable exercise, a known endpoint, and athletes who respond well to a visible build. Watch for: the percentage climbing faster than the athlete's readiness. A neat diagonal line is not a reason to force a missed rep.
2. Step loading
Instead of changing every week, hold the prescription for two or more exposures before stepping up. For example: two weeks at 72.5%, two at 77.5%, two at 82.5%, then a deload.
Good for: technical lifts, developing athletes, and coaches who want a clear opportunity to observe whether a load has become routine. Watch for: confusing repetition with stagnation; the goal is better execution at the same task before the next step.
3. Daily undulating progression
The prescription changes inside the week. A squat might appear as 5 × 5 at 72% on Monday, 6 × 2 at 82% on Wednesday, and 3 × 6 at 67% on Friday. Each exposure has a different job while the weekly pattern repeats or develops.
Good for: higher-frequency programs and trained athletes who benefit from regular exposure without repeating the same stress. Watch for: making every day different merely for novelty. Each session still needs a reason.
4. Weekly undulating progression
Here the week, rather than the day, carries the emphasis. Week one might prioritize volume around 70–75%, week two moderate strength work around 77–82%, and week three heavier work around 83–88%, before the pattern repeats with adjusted loads.
Good for: coaches who want broad variation with a simpler calendar. Watch for: large jumps that make one week feel unrelated to the next.
5. Accumulation to intensification
Split the block into phases. Accumulation uses more total work at moderate loads; intensification reduces volume and raises load. A final realization or test phase may follow.
Good for: longer blocks with a clear shift from building work capacity toward expressing strength. Watch for: abrupt phase changes. The first heavy week should not feel like an entirely new sport.
6. Heavy–light–medium
Three weekly exposures carry different stress. One simple arrangement is a heavy day near 82–87%, a light technical day around 65–72%, and a medium day around 75–80%. The exact labels matter less than keeping the sessions meaningfully distinct.
Good for: practicing a lift several times per week while protecting recovery. Watch for: the light day drifting upward until it becomes another hard day.
7. Peak and taper
A peak increases specificity and often intensity while reducing volume so accumulated fatigue can fall before a test or competition. The final exposures should rehearse the task without creating more fatigue than the athlete can dissipate.
Good for: meets, test weeks, and planned performance dates. Watch for: treating the taper as extra time to prove fitness. The work that builds strength belongs earlier in the block.
How to choose
- Name the outcome. General strength, technical practice, work capacity, and a competition peak require different shapes.
- Respect frequency. A once-weekly lift cannot undulate daily; a three-times-weekly lift usually should not repeat the same stress every session.

- Review the response. Logged work, effort, joint feedback, and clips tell you whether the drawn progression is producing the intended sessions.
The simplest useful model is usually the right starting point. Complexity earns its place only when it solves a coaching problem you can name.
