Training max vs. 1RM

A percentage is only as useful as the number underneath it. Decide what the reference represents before calculating the weight on the bar.

A one-repetition maximum describes performance: the greatest load an athlete can lift once under the chosen conditions. A training max is a coaching reference. It is usually set below a tested or estimated 1RM so the percentages in a program produce more conservative working weights.

The useful distinction is what the coach expects each number to do. A tested 1RM measures a result. A training max helps shape future work.

“Training max” does not have one standardized scientific definition; coaches and named programs use the term differently. The practical guidance below treats it as an intentionally conservative percentage-programming reference. How the choice changes the prescription

Suppose an athlete has squatted 180 kg.

  • 80% of tested 1RM: 144 kg, rounded to 145 kg on a standard 2.5 kg increment.
  • Training max at 90% of 1RM: 162 kg.
  • 80% of that training max: 129.6 kg, rounded to 130 kg.

Both prescriptions say “80%,” but one puts 145 kg on the bar and the other 130 kg. That 15 kg gap is not a rounding error. It is the consequence of using a different reference.

When a tested 1RM works well

  • The lift was tested recently under conditions that resemble training or competition.
  • The athlete is technically consistent enough for a maximal single to mean something repeatable.
  • The program's percentages and rep targets were designed around a true 1RM rather than a reduced training reference.
  • The coach also supplies an effort cap or adjustment rule for normal day-to-day variation.

A tested max is not automatically aggressive. The prescription becomes aggressive or conservative through the percentages, volume, proximity to failure, and adjustment rules built around it.

When a training max is useful

  • Returning after a break. The all-time best no longer represents current capacity.
  • Technique is changing. A conservative reference leaves room to practice without turning every exposure into a test.
  • The program was written for one. Some systems intentionally apply their published percentages to a reduced training max.
  • Repeated volume matters more than proving the top single. A lower reference may keep early weeks inside the intended effort range.
  • The estimate is uncertain. A cautious starting point is easier to correct after real sessions arrive.

How to set the number

Start from the most relevant recent evidence: a technically sound single, a hard set of two to five, or several weeks of logged work. Estimate the current 1RM if needed, then decide whether the block requires a reduction.

Do not hide the choice. Write it down: “Squat reference is 165 kg, set from an estimated 183 kg 1RM and reduced because the athlete is returning from six weeks away.” That sentence is much more useful at review time than a naked number in a cell.

When to update it

Update the reference when the evidence changes, not simply because the calendar moved forward.

  • Several sessions are meaningfully easier or harder than the intended RPE.
  • A test or competition produces a new result.
  • A technical change makes the old lift no longer comparable.
  • Illness, injury, or time away has materially changed current capacity.
  • The next block has a different purpose and needs a different level of conservatism.
